Podcast Transcript – Learn English Every Day
Anna: Hey, hi! Welcome to Easy English Podcast Show. I’m Anna.
Mike: And I’m Mike. So, what’s today’s topic? English Everywhere, yeah?
Anna: Yeah, English Everywhere. You know, English at home, on the street, in a cafe, at work… just everywhere.
Mike: Right. Oh, and before we forget — more materials for this podcast are in the description, or on our website, English-podcast.com.
Anna: Yeah, check it out. OK, let’s start.
Why English Is Everywhere in Daily Life
Mike: So, what are we talking about today?
Anna: Today we talk about a very important topic — English everywhere. We talk about English in our everyday life: in songs, apps, cafes, the internet, at home, on the street, and so on.
Mike: Because English is not only in the classroom. English is everywhere.
Anna: Yeah, that’s true. You can learn English just by doing your things. You learn it in a natural way.
Mike: It means English is around us. We can see English signs. We can hear English every day, everywhere.
Anna: For example, you go to the city. You see a sign. You see a shop name. You see an app on your phone. Or you look at song words. You look for info on the internet. Yeah, anywhere.
Mike: English is the number one language in the world. So you can find it in any corner of the world.
Anna: Interesting — in our own language, many words come from English.
Mike: Because it’s the most popular and useful language in the world.
Anna: That’s true. So let’s look at an example when English helps in a difficult situation. It is really useful.
Mike: Let’s go!
Roleplay: Using English in a Taxi App
Anna: Oh, Mike, imagine: I’m in another country. I want to call a taxi with an app. But the app is all in English. I press the wrong thing and I panic.
Mike: OK, let’s act. You are a traveler. I am a local person. Let’s go.
Anna: Excuse me, I need a taxi. I open the app, but I don’t understand. Here: “Pick-up location.” What is it?
Mike: It means the place where the driver picks you up. Where are you now?
Anna: I’m near the coffee shop. But I pressed “Cancel,” not “Confirm.” Oh no.
Mike: Don’t worry. Look: “Destination” — that’s where you go. Type your hotel here.
Anna: Hotel? OK. “Grand Hotel.” And then?
Mike: Then choose “Cash” or “Card.” “Confirm ride” — confirm the ride.
Anna: Confirm ride. OK. And what does “Driver is on the way” mean?
Mike: It means the driver is coming. Wait here. You see? English helps.
Anna: Yes! Thank you! Now I understand: pick-up location, destination, confirm ride, driver is on the way.
Mike: Perfect. And if you don’t know a word, open a translator and ask: “What does this word mean?”
Anna: And ask: “How can I use it?” That’s the best way to learn.
Repeat After Us: Taxi App Phrases
Anna: Let’s repeat the phrases from our roleplay. Listeners, repeat after us.
Mike: “Pick-up location” — the place where the driver picks you up.
Anna: “Pick-up location.”
Mike: “Destination” — the place where you go.
Anna: “Destination.”
Mike: “Confirm ride” — confirm the ride.
Anna: “Confirm ride.”
Mike: “Driver is on the way” — the driver is coming.
Anna: “Driver is on the way.”
Mike: “Cash or card?” — cash or card?
Anna: “Cash or card?”
Mike: And also: “Excuse me, I need a taxi.”
Anna: “Excuse me, I need a taxi.”
Mike: “I don’t understand.”
Mike: “Can you help me?”
Mike: Great. Now let’s make a mini-dialogue.
Anna: Excuse me, I need a taxi. I don’t understand the app. Can you help me?
Mike: Sure. Where is your pick-up location? What is your destination?
Anna: Pick-up location is the coffee shop. Destination is the Grand Hotel.
Mike: Good. Choose card or cash, then confirm ride.
Anna: Confirm ride. Thank you!
Mike: You’re welcome. Driver is on the way.
Anna: Great! Repeat these phrases every day, and you will remember them.
How to Learn Words in Context
Mike: When I started learning English, I thought I had to study only from a book. But my progress was slow.
Anna: And what changed?
Mike: I understood: you must learn English all the time. Not only when you have free time and want to.
Anna: That’s true. Now every person has a smartphone in their hand.
Mike: Yes. If you see a word you don’t understand, and you want to know what it means, just ask a translator: “What does this word mean?”
Anna: And it’s important to ask: “When can I use it?”
Mike: For example. The word “confirm” means to say yes, to make sure. But in a taxi app, you see “Confirm ride” — confirm the ride. And in a cafe, maybe “Confirm your order” — confirm your order.
Anna: So the translation alone is not enough.
Mike: Exactly. So learn words in context. It is very useful and effective. It helped me, and it will help you. I promise.
